A Venom Movie Is Coming Sooner Than You Think

Shock and awe!! Perhaps backed by expectations of the re-invigoration of the Spider-Man movie franchise due in no small part to the character's "Homecoming" in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony (Columbia) has decided to grab an October 5th, 2018 release date previously occupied by Warner Bros. Aquaman (now bumped to December, 2018, for whatever reason) for VENOM! This info, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter and tipped to us by Heidi at Comics Beat, starts with a YAY and sort of ends with a HUH?

CB reports:
It’s written by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinker, the latter of whom wrote the pretty poorly received The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

As for the Director, THR reports that there is NO one in the chair just yet.

Now for the HUH moment! You ready? While Sony must be jumping for joy over Spider-Man's reception in Captain America: Civil War and, on the back of that, the building anticipation for their own, in MCU Spider-Man: Homecoming, they seem to be feeling confident they can get a (perhaps rated R after the recent success of FOX's Logan) Venom movie off the ground...on their own...possibly even without Spider-Man himself! Odd. And silly to an extent.

While most geeks know the origin of Venom, he's still widely unknown to the public, especially those that are following super hero history via films alone. Is SONY hoping the character looks enough like Spidey to sell as a rated R alternative? More importantly, is the world ready to embrace a sometimes comical, usually evil version of Spider-Man that often eats people? Is SONY looking for their own Deadpool franchise? Time will tell.
